Blog Post - HI Trip Day 2 by Jessica Hackner, 01/16/17

Impact Trip Haitian Initiative Sponsor Haiti
First thing this morning, we headed to the National Stadium to set up for the Coaches Across Continents training. It was exciting to be on the field at the stadium and inspiring to watch them train, despite language differences, the local coaches on social impact education.

Then we were able to go to the National Museum, where we got a guided tour about the history of Haiti and saw artifacts (including the anchor of the Santa Maria, which had a piece cut out of it that was given to Charles Lindbergh). It was great to learn about the heritage of this place we’ve now been in for only about 24 hours.

The best part of the day - today was our first day at the HI field, which meant our first trip to Citi Soleil. We were met by dozens of enthusiastic children who were as excited to meet us as we were to meet them. Some of us sat in on the practices and some of us headed over to the school, where we watched an English class and helped hand out new shoes to the kids. I can’t wait to go back and meet with the students and coaches for the rest of the week (and take more photos of them, because they love posing and then looking at them!).

So far, all of the people we've met have been truly welcoming, which helps to ease what might be a difficult culture shock for some. Honestly, coming from Minnesota, the biggest shock for me has been the weather, but that’s easy to look past with all of the great work everyone is doing.
