Gatorade Player of the Year Juan Louis Donates to The Sanneh Foundation
Juan Louis of Washburn Senior High School is the winner of the 2016-2017 Minnesota boys soccer Gatorade Player of the Year. Upon receiving this great honor, he decided to donate his $1,000 award to The Sanneh Foundation. Juan Louis came up through the TSF Haitian Initiative program in Cite Soleil, Haiti. He first came to the States as a part of the Sports Diplomacy Exchange Program through TSF, for a summer trip to participate in the Schwan's Cup tournament. Juan shined in the tournament as his team won the cup. Upon going back to Haiti, Juan knew that he wanted to come back to the States. Luckily, this was made possible when a host family had offered to take Juan in, and help him achieve his goals of getting into college and playing soccer. Low and behold, Juan is now attending Drake University on scholarship
"I donated my prize to The Sanneh Foundation because of the good things they been doing around Minnesota such as camps and other activities that help the community grow. Also internationally it's an incredible job they're doing, especially in Haiti, giving kids opportunities to play the game of soccer, send them to school, and teaching them to be a better human being later on in life," says Juan. "Soccer helped me go through hard times in Haiti, such as poverty, insecurity, and political issues. Growing up in Haiti is always something that is hard. Sometimes if you don’t set a goal you might not have the courage to persevere, or there might be too many influences where you can end up in the wrong path of that goal."
Juan's love for the game is clear, as his pursuit of the game has taken him to new places. We are excited to see where Juan ends up next. For now, we are proud that Juan is living his dream. Thank you to Juan for giving back to The Sanneh Foundation.
